Southampton was founded in 1640, and considered to be the first English Settlement in the State of New York.

In 1872, when the Long Island Rail Road was extended eastward, it greatly influenced Southampton's growth and expansion. Southampton Village became the country's first summer art colony and quickly became home to wealthy New Yorkers looking for clean air, beautiful beaches and fresh goods from the farmers and waterways.
