Orient

Orient, located on the easternmost end of the North Fork of Long Island, New York, has a rich history dating back to 1661 when six English families settled in the area. Originally called Oysterponds Upper Neck due to the abundance of shellfish, the name was changed to Orient to reflect its position as the easternmost point on the North Fork.

Orient was a popular resort destination by 1870, with the Orient Point Inn hosting notable figures such as President Grover Cleveland, Walt Whitman, and Sarah Bernhardt. James Fenimore Cooper even wrote “Sea Lions,” which was set in Orient.

North Fork real estate in Orient is highly sought after, with a collection of original wood homes reflecting the town’s history. The Peconic Bay shore boasts natural beauty, and Orient has one of the few places on the Eastern Shore of the US with original tidal wetlands intact, allowing for a spectacular bird migration. The town is also convenient for summer vacations, with ferries to New London, CT and Orient Beach State Park.
